The instructions below tell you how to use the Moodle text editor to add content. This text editor appears when it is available to add content within Moodle. In the text editor content can be added such as text, pictures, embeddable content such as a video, tables, hyperlinks to web pages and files, and other media. After making changes within the text editor it is important to save changes on the page you made changes within the text editor.

1. Toolbar toggle and Full Screen Mode

To expand the toolbar to show all content formatting options click the Toolbar Toggle button.

You can expand the Content box to full screen mode by first clicking the Toolbar Toggle button and then clicking the Toggle full screen mode button on the toolbar. (Click the Toggle full screen mode button again to exit full screen mode.)

2. Text Formatting in the Text Editor

The Text Editor Toolbar has a number of familiar features that are in most word processing programs. Click here to view the functions of each button that the Text Editor has. Here's a few basic features to get you started in adding content to your resources and activities in Moodle.


Within the top row of the Text Editor you can:


Add different preset heading & paragraph formats which are ADA compliant.

Add a bulleted OR numbered list.

Link text or content to Moodle and outside web sources. (Hyperlink).

Insert Images Media. (Although we try and refrain from importing much media outside of images. We prefer to use other sources such as YouTube and videos.stanly.edu and embedding from there into here). 3. How to Add Hyperlinks


Hyperlinks allow you to make words, sentences, pictures, tables, etc. within your content so that a student can click on the item and it will take them to a website page or computer file such as a Word document.


To add a webpage hyperlink:


First copy the URL address from the page you want to link.

Then highlight the word, sentence, or image you want to link in Moodle and click the Insert/edit link button on the Text Editor Toolbar.

How to add a computer file hyperlink:


Next click Find or upload an image…


Then highlight the word, sentence, or image you want to make the hyperling and click the Insert/edit link button on the Text Editor Toolbar.

Click the box next to the link URL field to choose a file.

Next click Choose File and choose the image you want to add.

4. Adding Pictures


In addition to text information and hyperlinks you can also add images into your course content.


To add an image:


Click the Insert/edit image button on the Text Editor Toolbar.

Next click Choose File and choose the image you want to add.

5. Embedding Media


You can provide a hyperlink to a video or other media into your course content but some videos and media allow you to be able to embed the content. Embedding media is placing a video, audio, etc. into a site, or in this case your course, so that students do not need to leave your Moodle course to view it.


To embed content such as a YouTube video:


First find the video you want to embed and click Share, which is usually located right under the video’s title. Then click Embed.

Next copy that code under Embed.

Next go back to the activity or resource in Moodle where you want to add this and click the Edit HTML Source button on the Text Editor Toolbar. You may have to expand the toolbar with the Toolbar Toggle feature to get the HTML button to appear.

Next, paste that code you copied from the video in the HTML Source Editor box.
